The uniquely named Café Huskies is located in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, the world’s northernmost town. It’s just like any other coffee shop, where patrons come to enjoy poppy-seed cake slices with chai lattes, while reading a book or sitting down at a nook, chatting with friends, or typing away on their laptops. But this cozy café also offers something extra. You’ll always find here a couple of friendly huskies lounging around. Yep, that’s what the name is for!
The Café
This dog café is located on the remote Norwegian archipelago, surrounded by icy vistas and the cold blue waters of the Arctic Ocean. Nicola Bunyan, Martin Fiala, Kristina Labunskaite, and Iris Dahle Bjørkmann are the four Norwegian transplants, who worked at a hotel in Longyearbyen. They planned to open this business together to create a homey environment in this café, for locals and visitors coming into the area hoping to see northern lights and polar bears. Now, while there’s no guarantee to catch a glimpse of polar bears, the visitors in the café surely can cuddle more friendly furry animals, the huskies.
The Dogs
Café Huskies is centered on the idea of a dog café, which hosts a rotating crew of local pups and dogs. They mainly belong to the café staff, their friends, friends of friends, some former colleagues, and other residents. That means that the community is totally game when it comes to leaving their pet dogs at the café for a day or two, to bring joy to the visitors. Making the name a success, the huskies create a cozy living room vibe in the café. After being dropped off, the pups just roam free, hang out, lounge in several dog couches, beds, and the floor, and enjoy their meals at mealtimes. Of course, these huskies are also in hot demand from visitors for quick cute Instagram photos!
